that were out of her control. One of her first memories, if not her
very first, was of crude men in black pajamas coming into her home
to take away her father. She could still hear her mother’s screams
as her baby sister was torn out of her arms and violently thrown to
the floor. In her nightmares, years later, she could still see her father
being punched and dragged out of the house. The years immediately
after her father was taken were filled with hunger and fear."
Ha Thuy was one of the teachers that was working in the school in Mandalay that I imagined. I tell the story of four of these teachers and how their lives became intertwined with each other.
Ha Thuy just happened to have the bad luck of being born in 1971 in South Vietnam with her father supporting the wrong side. The Americans in this case. She had to leave Vietnam to find work which is how she eventually made her way to Mandalay Myanmar.
